Then followed a highly complex timetable of starching, drying and damping the piles, in an order which resulted in all the piles being ready for finishing at the correct time. Pile 5 was mangled, then the rest of the piles were ironed in order. The whole finishing process took almost another twenty work hours, of which the ironing took almost twelve and the mangling two and a half hours.

This system was theoretical, of course, yet basically the same system was described by a laundrymaid working at Shugborough in the 1930s. The methods were identical and the order of wash (family body linen, household linen, servant linen) was pretty much universal, the application of both common sense and domestic hierarchy.
